2013 Will be the Year I Say Goodbye to Acne Scars

Perhaps your acne scars are from high school many years ago; or maybe they are from last year, before your acne was well-controlled.  Regardless, if you don't do something to clear your acne scars, they won't go away on their own.  Acne scars result from inflammatory acne lesions; when the skin heals after the inflammatory insult, the skin repairs itself, which often results in an uneven skin texture and atrophic (or pitted) areas of the skin.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "There are a variety of methods used for the treatment of acne scars.  Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing is the most effective and most permanent option, though other laser and non-laser treatment options do exist and work well in many instances.  I recommend meeting with your dermatologist to discuss the specific type of acne scars that you have, and the best treatment for getting rid of acne scars on your particular skin." The most effective treatments for acne scars are:
  • Fractional CO2 Laser: This laser resurfacing treatment pokes tiny holes in the skin's surface, which stimulates the production of healthy collagen to fill in pitted acne scars.  The result is smoother skin, with permanent results.  Plan for approximately 5 days of downtime after Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing.
  • FAST method of treating acne scars: The FAST method of treating acne scars was developed by Dr. Schweiger for the treatment of focal acne scars.  The Fractional CO2 laser is utilized in a unique manner, to give dramatic results with little downtime.
  • Fraxel laser treatment: The Fraxel laser is a non-ablative resurfacing laser, which sends its enery through the skin, without ablating the skin's surface.  The result is smoother skin with less downtime than the Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing treatment.
  • Dermal fillers: Dermal fillers can be injected into acne scars to raise  the pitted scars closer to the plane of the normal skin.  The results can be appreciated immediately and last for 6-9 months after each treatment.
