Acne Scar Treatment for Skin of Color

Acne can affect anyone, regardless of their skin color.  It is important to treat acne quickly, in order to prevent permanent scarring.  However, scarring does sometimes occur and thankfully there are options for the treatment of scarring in all patients.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "For deep, pitted, acne scars we primarily use fractional laser resurfacing treatments.  The two most commonly used lasers are the Fractional CO2 laser and the Fraxel laser.  Both lasers work by stimulating the production of collagen in the pitted acne scars, but they each work in a unique way." Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing and Fraxel laser resurfacing both work by poking microscopic holes in the skin, which stimulates the production of collagen.  The Fractional CO2 laser is ablative, meaning that the type of energy that it uses actually  breaks the surface of the skin.  The Fraxel laser is a non-ablative laser, meaning that its energy penetrates the skin without disrupting the skin's barrier.  We use both of these lasers to treat acne scarring at Schweiger Dermatology and the Clear Clinic, because we feel that one is often more appropriate than the other for certain patients. Most patients with skin of color can safely have treatment of their acne scars with either the Fractional CO2 laser or the Fraxel laser.  However, for darker skin types, we often recommend the Fraxel laser treatment.  The Fraxel laser treatment has been shown to be safe for all skin types, including the treatment of acne scars in Indian and African American skin.  Four treatments are required for treatment of most acne scars, with treatments performed at 3-4 week intervals.
