Acne Tips for Summertime

As temperatures remain elevated, it is important to tailor your acne regimen for the heat and sun exposure that comes along with summertime.  Daily sun protection, in the form of sunscreen or sun protective clothing, is key for all patients.  However, there are a few things specific to our acne patients that will help keep their skin clear all summer.
  • Protect your skin - don't be afraid of using sunscreen daily.  Many patients fear that sunscreen will cause new acne bumps to form.  The truth is that, if you choose a non-comedogenic sunscreen, it will not contribute to the formation of acne.
  • This is the season where toner shines - we generally don't consider toner to be a mandatory part of the skin care regimen.  However, for our acne patients with excessive oil production, the humid summer months can be unbearable.  The use of a toner in the afternoon or early evening can help to remove the oily residue that builds up on your skin during the day.
  • Laser acne treatments are safe during the summer months, but may require a bit of planning.  The Isolaz acne treatment, and Red and Blue LED light treatment do not cause sun sensitivity.  Photodynamic Therapy, an effective acne treatment that is often combined with the Isolaz and Red/Blue Light treatments, requires sun avoidance for 48 hours after treatment.  Dr. Schweiger notes that, "Many of our patient choose to have their treatments during the work week, when they will not be exposed to the sun."
