Acne and Acne Treatments

Acne (also known as acne vulgaris) is a common skin condition that affects almost all people at some point in their life, but to varying degrees. While it is more common in teenagers, it also affects over 20% of all adults.

What Causes Acne?

There are many factors that can contribute to the formation of acne. The underlying issue is abnormal regulation of cells inside the tiny hair follicles on the face, which can cause inflammation. This inflammation can present itself in a number of different ways including:

  • Open comedones (blackheads)
  • Closed comedones (whiteheads)
  • Papules (red bumps)
  • Pustules (pus bumps)
  • Cysts (painful deep nodules)

There are many rumors surrounding the different causes of acne, but rest assured that acne is not caused by dirt or by foods.

Acne Treatments

Acne treatments range from over-the-counter solutions to prescription medications and dermatologist-performed procedures. While over-the-counter solutions may help, prescription acne medications from Dr. Schweiger can start showing results within 2-4 weeks.

Prescription Acne Medication Include:

  • Topical Antibiotics
  • Topical Retinoids
  • Oral Antibiotics
  • Oral Hormonal Medications
  • Accutane

Along with prescription medication there are also in-office dermatologist-performed treatments that work well and fast:
