What to Look for in an Anti-Aging Cream

There are so many anti-aging creams being sold, we are constantly promised that a cream can "eliminate wrinkles" or that a serum is a "substitute for Botox."  The truth is that no cream or serum can eliminate wrinkles or serve as a substitute for Botox.  However, at-home skin care creams are an important part of any anti-aging regimen.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "The difficult part of choosing an anti-aging home regimen is to sort through everything that is available.  There are a few main ingredients that should be a part of all anti-aging home regimens: retinoid or retinol, antioxidants and sun protection." Retinols (Retinoids are the prescription-strength version) regulate skin cell turnover.  These products prevent the breakdown of collagen and stimulate the production of new collagen.  Retinols and Retinoids can also help to lighten pigmentation from years of sun.  Retinols and Retinoids have been proven in scientific studies to prevent the formation of wrinkles and fine lines; they are the only ingredients that have been proven to diminish wrinkles and fine lines that have already formed. Antioxidants (such as coffee berry, grape seed extract and green tea) block free radicals from breaking down collagen in the skin.  When used regularly, antioxidants can prevent the formation of wrinkles and decrease redness in the skin. Sun protection is one of the most important anti-aging steps.  Sun exposure promotes the formation of pigmentation on the skin, resulting in those unsightly dark sun spots.  Sun exposure also leads to a breakdown in collagen, resulting in wrinkles and undesirable skin texture.  Lastly, ouf course, sun exposure also increases your risk of developing a skin cancer.  It is important to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen every day to prevent excess sun exposure. Retinoids, antioxidants and sun protection are the three anti-aging steps that should not be missed in any at-home anti-aging regimen.  Moisturizing the skin is also important, moisturizers are often combined with these ingredients or can be used immediately afterward.  It is particularly important to moisturize the area around your eyes, as dryness in this area causes a wrinkled appearance.  Complete anti-aging regimens incorporate home care with in-office procedures when appropriate.  Treatments such as Botox, Juvederm and Restylane, Fraxel, and Thermage can boost your anti-aging regimen to a higher level.
