Are You a Skin Picker? Here’s How to Find Out.

Picking at your skin can seem very innocent.  Unfortunately, many of our patients pick at their skin from time to time.  However, picking at a tiny bump on your skin (although it can harm the skin!) does not mean that you are a "skin picker."  It is important to recognize whether you are a 'skin picker' or not, and if so, why it is important to stop picking at your skin as quickly as possible. Common signs that we see in 'skin pickers' are:
  • Inability to resist picking at the skin
  • Picking at a 'blemish' that isn't really present on your skin
  • Feeling relaxed during or after picking at your skin
  • Scabs or scars on your skin from picking
  • Finding that picking at your skin gets in the way of your daily activities
Dr. Schweiger explains that, "It is important for patients who are chronic skin pickers to understand why it is so important to receive treatment for their condition.  Skin picking causes permanent damage to the skin.  It can result in scarring of the skin and increases the risk of skin infections at the site.  The changes caused by picking at your skin can be permanent, or may require significant laser treatments to reverse the damage from a single episode of skin picking." It is important to visit your dermatologist if you think you may be a skin picker.  Your dermatologist can help you to treat the underlying skin issue that you are picking at, and if necessary, can help to refer you to a psychologist for strategies on avoiding skin picking.
