At-Home Blue Light Treatments: Do They Work?

At-home blue light devices have become very popular over the past few years.  They are touted as bringing the in-office treatments that dermatologists offer into your own home.  In reality, board certified dermatologist, Dr. Eric Schweiger of NYC,  says that “they are most effective when used as an adjunct to an in-office Blue LED Light regimen.  Patients are finding that at-home devices are an effective way to push their progress along even more quickly in between their appointments.”  In-office Blue LED Light treatments, often combined with a medication called Levulan, are more aggressive than at-home treatments.  However, these treatments often work best when combined with either prescription medications or at-home light treatments used in-between appointments. Blue LED Light is now used both in the office and at home for the treatment of acne.  Blue LED Light is antibacterial, decreasing the P. acnes bacteria that is found within the pores that can eventually leads to acne lesions.  These at-home devices provide a great solution, for a fairly low cost, for patients looking for something that they can do at home in between appointments.   Examples of Blue LED Light devices include the Tria and Tanda systems.
