Espanol Botox for Hyperhidrosis of Feet

What is Hyperhidrosis? Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, can be embarrassing and debilitating for many people.  Hyperhidrosis is defined by excessive sweating beyond what is necessary to cool the area.  Sweating is essential for the body, but often patients note that they are sweating more than is necessary or sweating when the body doesn’t need to be cooled, such as during social situations.  The most common areas for excessive sweating are the underarms, face, palms of the hand, and soles of the feet.  Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can interfere with daily activities and cause unnecessary stress. Is there a topical medication available to improve hyperhidrosis? Topical medications are available for the treatment of excessive sweating.  These treatments, such as Drysol, can cause irritation on the skin.  Many patients find that they cannot tolerate these irritating medications on the areas of the body that they are experiencing excessive sweating.  Some patients find that over-the-counter treatments, such as Certain-Dri, are effective; though many patients experience irritation with these treatments as well.  For patients who are unable to tolerate topical hyperhidrosis medications, or for those who do not see improvement using topical medications, Botox is a great option for preventing excessive sweating. What is Botox? Botox is a medication that is used to decrease excessive sweating on the underarms, hands and feet.  Botox is most famous for its cosmetic use in preventing deep wrinkles on the face. Why does Botox improve hyperhidrosis? Botox is commonly used to treat hyperhidrosis on many areas of the body.  Botox works by blocking the neurotransmitter that stimulates sweat glands to overproduce and create excess moisture in a localized area.  The effects of Botox take 2 weeks to work, but after the onset of Botox on the sweat glands, patients experience an approximately 80% reduction in sweating in the treated area.  This effect lasts for 6 months. Does Botox improve hyperhidrosis of the feet? Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can be embarrassing and disruptive to normal functioning.  Sweaty feet can make normal interactions very stressful.  Botox can help to reduce the stress of worrying about excessive sweating on the feet.  Patients with hyperhidrosis of the soles of the feet can benefit from Botox treatment to the area. What should I expect during my appointment for Botox treatment of hyperhidrosis of the feet? During Botox treatment for excessive sweating on the feet, a light cooling spray may be used to numb the area begin injected.  Approximately 20 injections are made to each foot.  The visit will last approximately 30 minutes and there is no downtime after your treatment.  Improvement of hyperhidrosis of the feet takes approximately 1-2 weeks after Botox injection.
