Botox Treatment FAQ

What is Botox?Botox NY Botox is a medication approved by the FDA for the relaxation of the facial muscles that make movements leading to wrinkles. It is a natural substance that is injected directly into the muscles in order to block that signal that causes the muscle to contract.  This simple treatment prevents the development of wrinkles on the face. How does Botox work?  The cosmetic effects of Botox were discovered by accident.  An ophthalmologist in Vancouver discovered that the patients she had treated with botulinum toxin for eye spasms were seeing improvement in the appearance of the deep wrinkle between there eyebrows.  This ophthalmologist was married to a dermatologist, who began to use Botox to purposely relax the muscles between the eyebrows with the goal of reducing wrinkles.  Botox is one brand name for botulinum toxin (Dysport is another).  Botox blocks the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine; acetylcholine is the chemical that signals muscle contraction.  By blocking this signal, there is a temporary relaxation of the treated muscles.  This muscle relaxation lasts for three to four months. Botox NYCWhere on the face is Botox used? Botox is most commonly used to treat the wrinkles between the eyebrows (the glabella), the crow’s (“crows”) feet around the eyes, and the lines on the forehead.  Experienced injectors can inject Botox to target the muscles on other areas of the face and neck.  Botox can be used to diminish the lines around the mouth (aka smoker’s lines), reverse the downturn at the corners of the mouth, raise drooping eyebrows and decrease the appearance of the bands of the neck.  It can also be used to treat hyperactive muscles of the face that lead to facial asymmetry. Will I look “done” if I have Botox? Absolutely not.  When performed properly, Botox gives a very natural look.  It decreases the appearance of wrinkles and prevents deep wrinkles from developing at rest. Does Botox hurt? Botox does not hurt.  Dr. Schweiger uses a very tiny needle that feels only like a little pinch.  There is no discomfort after the injection, though some people note that they get a headache for a few hours after their treatment. Is Botox permanent? Botox is not permanent; the chemical block of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which allows the muscles to stay in a relaxed state, lasts for three to four months.
