Botox Treatment for TMJ

Temporomandibular joint disorders can now be treated with Botox injections. The treatment takes just a few minutes and is performed in a dermatologist’s office, rather than older treatments consisting of invasive surgeries and soft diets.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, “Botox blocks the neurotransmitters that lead to localized muscle contraction.  This allows the jaw muscles surrounding the temporomandibular joint to relax.  This relaxation of jaw tension often decreases of eliminates the pain associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and offers TMJ relief. Botox treatment for TMJ has no downtime and the effects are seen within two weeks.  Relaxation of jaw tension can often improve severe tension headaches and jaw pain.  The treatment for TMJ is safe and has given many patients TMJ relief without surgery.
