Botox Uses You May Not Know About

new-uses-for-botox-new-yorkYou probably know that Botox can be used to get rid of wrinkles on the face.  It is injected directly into the overactive muscles of the face, to block the neurotransmitter that signals muscle contraction.  By relaxing overactive muscles, wrinkles are softened and allowed to repair themselves.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "Although Botox is most commonly used to get rid of wrinkles on the face, there are many other uses for Botox that are not as well-known.  Not everyone knows that Botox can actually be used to prevent wrinkles; when it is injected into overactive muscles, even before the wrinkles form at rest, it prevents a wrinkle from developing.  Botox can be used to reshape the brows or lift heavy eyelids.  We also commonly use Botox to stop excessive sweating, particularly on the underarms, hands and feet." New Beauty magazine published a list of additional, lesser known, uses for Botox.  Here are a few of the highlights from their list:
  • Botox can be injected off-label into the calves, to cause atrophy of the muscles and improve the appearance of bulky calves.
  • The FDA recently approved Botox to relax overactive bladders, to reduce incontinence and leakage.
  • Migraines can be treated with Botox; regular injections can decrease the pain associated with migraine headaches.
  •  Botox may be useful in lifting sagging breasts; it is theorized that by relaxing the pectoral muscles, the muscles will not pull down on the breasts and the breasts will be lifted without surgery.
  • By blocking the neurotransmitter that stimulates muscle contraction, Botox can stop muscle spasms and twitches.
