Physician Assistants (PA’s) are state licensed medical practitioners who work with a supervising physician within a medical practice or organization. PA’s have a wide range of responsibilities such as performing procedures, ordering and interpretation of lab tests as well as diagnostics and treatment. They also can prescribe medication. Certified Physician Assistants (who hold the title of PA-C) gain this distinction by passing an exam administered jointly by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and the National Board of Medical Examiners. Certification is maintained through completion of 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years as well as successfully passing a national recertification exam every six years. This certification process follows the PA’s initial education and training in a PA program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
