Chemical Peels

What is a chemical peel? Chemical peels are a treatment performed in a dermatologist’s office that is aimed to treat fine lines, pigment (brown spots), photo-damage, melasma, active acne and acne scars. NYC dermatologist, Dr. Schweiger uses chemical peels to treat these conditions. The process involves applying a chemical agent to the skin for a specified amount of time in order to remove the epidermis (top layer of skin) and depending on the strength of the peeling agent, illicit variable damage to the dermis to stimulate collagen remodeling. What chemical peel is best? There are several chemicals that can be used as peeling agents; there is no “best chemical peel” for all patients. Popular peeling agents include Glycolic Acid, Jessner’s solution, Salicylic acid and TCA. Can you tell me about the actual chemical peel procedure? Before the treatment, the skin is cleansed with soap and water, prepped with an alcohol pad and then an Acetone scrub is applied to the skin to remove the stratum corneum (outermost layer of epidermis). The chemical peeling agent is then applied to the skin and left on for 1 to 10 minutes. The chemical is then removed and a hydrating cream is applied. Redness is common immediately after the procedure, and then peeling will last from 2- 7 days. How many chemical peel sessions are needed? A series of chemical peels are usually needed to get optimal results. Most patients require an average of around 4 treatments. What is the cost of a chemical peel? The price of a chemical peel varies by size of solution used and the area. To schedule chemical peel consultation with Manhattan dermatologist Dr. Schweiger, click here
