What is a Cortisone Injection?

A cortisone injection is an in-office treatment performed to quickly reduce the appearance of active acne.  A medication called triamcinolone is injected at a low concentration directly into the papule (“pimple.”)  This procedure takes only a minute and it relatively pain-free.  There is no change prior to leaving the office; there is no downtime and you may apply makeup immediately after your appointment.  Over the next 24 hours, the pimple will improve significantly, usually completely flattening out.  This is more effective than at-home spot treatments, including benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.
