Cosmetic Procedures on the Rise Thanks to Social Media

If you have ever seen a photo of yourself on Facebook and cringed, you're not alone. In this era of Instagram and Facebook, where any moment could potentially get captured in a photo that is then seen by all your friends--and their friends--it's no surprise that people are paying more attention to their looks. Many people are going beyond just hair and makeup and are seeking out cosmetic procedures at the doctor's office. According to a just-released survey from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, requests for cosmetic procedures as a result of social media photo sharing rose 31 percent in 2012. Schweiger Dermatology and Clear Clinic founder Dr. Eric Schweiger has seen an uptick in appointments at both of his Manhattan practices for skin rejuvenating treatments, such as acne scar removal, Fraxel, Sublative and Thermage, by patients who are hoping to improve their appearance for social media. “I recently had a patient request laser acne scar removal treatment because she was embarrassed of how her skin looked in an Instagram photo she appeared in,” says Dr. Schweiger. “Thanks to the proliferation of social media, there is much more pressure to look picture-perfect all the time, as this images have the potential to be seen by your entire social network.”  Looking good for the camera doesn't need to be expensive or painful. There are ways to improve your appearance that are both minimally or non-invasive and more wallet-friendly. The new Sublative treatment rejuvenates the skin as well as treats acne scars with no downtime and it's a lot more affordable than most other laser treatments. Fraxel, which is Kim Kardashian's cosmetic procedure of choice (and we know how much she loves sharing her pics on social media!), is able to rid the skin of scars, fine lines and sun spots. IPL photofacials are amazing at reducing freckles, hyperpigmentation and brown spots, leaving the skin looking completely clear. Since most of us want instant gratification, a quick-fix like Botox is always a way to make you look years younger and more relaxed immediately.
