FAQ About Acne: Acne Causes, Is Acne Contagious?

I keep my face clean, wash morning and evening, why am I still having breakouts? Keeping your face clean is only one step in the equation of acne formation.   Increased sebum production, dead skin cells clogging the hair follicles and the p. acnes bacteria all contribute to the formation of acne. Is acne caused by an internal health problem? No; acne is not a sign that there is any internal health problem.  Healthy people can have acne and patients with internal health problems are not more likely to have acne. Is acne contagious? No; acne is not contagious.  The p. acnes bacteria is not infectious in the same way as other bacteria.  Acne is a reaction to the p. acnes bacteria, in addition to other facters, such as increased sebum production.  You cannot catch acne from someone else.
