Fractional CO2 Laser for Acne Scarring

For patients with extensive pitted acne scars, the Fractional CO2 laser treatment has proven to be one of the most effective treatment options available.  Pitted acne scars do not heal on their own.  The loss of collagen, that occurs during the healing process after acne resolves, does not improve on its own.  There are many treatment options available for pitted acne scars, including lasers, dermal fillers, and subcision.  However, lasers give the most significant and long-lasting improvement for acne scars. The Fractional CO2 laser works by poking microscopic holes in the skin's surface with its CO2 laser energy.  These holes are fractionated, meaning that healthy skin is left between every tiny area of the skin that is treated.  This allows for safer treatments, faster healing, and stronger treatments to be performed for better results with fewer side effects.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "The Fractional CO2 laser for acne scarring is one of the most popular treatments performed at Schweiger Dermatology and the Clear Clinic.  Patients see an average of 50-70% improvement of their acne scars, with only a single treatment." Fractional CO2 laser for acne scarring is appropriate for nearly all skin types; even patients with skin of color can safely undergo laser treatment for their acne scars.  After the Fractional CO2 laser treatment, patients should expect approximately 5 days of downtime.  They will feel no pain, but will experience swelling and crusting over the treated area.  After the downtime resolves, they may have mild redness for a few more days, which is easily covered by light makeup.  Some improvement of the acne scarring can be appreciated during the one week follow up visit, but the complete improvement takes a few months to present.  This is because collagen regeneration (the laser stimulates collagen production to "fill in" the pitted acne scars) can take up to 6 months to be fully complete.
