Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment of Surgical Scars

What is the Fractional CO2 laser? The Fractional CO2 is a fractional laser treatment used for treating sun spots, fine lines, stretch marks, acne scarring, surgical scarring and traumatic scarring.  The Fractional CO2 lasers can minimize the appearance of surgical and traumatic scars in just 1-2 treatments.  The most popular examples of Fractional CO2 lasers are the MiXto, TotalFX and Fraxel Re:pair What does it mean to be a fractional laser? Fractional lasers treat microscopic areas of the skin in each pulse, leaving the surrounding area intact.  Treating the skin in this way allows for faster healing, compared to traditional resurfacing lasers.  Using a fractional laser is safer and often more effective than the older non-fractional lasers. What types of scars can be treated with Fractional CO2 lasers? Fractional CO2 lasers, such as the MiXto, are very effective for many types of scarring.  They can be used effectively for the revision of surgical scars.  Scars that don’t look the way you hoped can usually be revised and improved upon with only 1 Fractional CO2 treatment.  This can be done on any part of the body. How do Fractional CO2 lasers work? The Fractional CO2 lasers produce numerous microscopic laser columns that penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate your skin’s own healing process.  The damaged skin is then replaced with collagen produced by your own body.  The result is a smoother, healthier appearing scar. Are Fractional CO2 lasers safe to use on surgical and traumatic scars? Yes, Fractional CO2 lasers are very safe and effective for the treatment of scarring.  They are safe to use on all healed surgical scars and will not compromise the surgery in any way. Are Fractional CO2 laser treatments safe to use in darker skin types? Dr. Schweiger safely treats acne scars in patients with all skin types including Asian, Indian, and African-American skin. An experienced laser surgeon is needed to treat darker skin types safely. What should I expect during my visit? After your initial consultation, we will determine the best course of action for the treatment of your scar.  The treatment will be done in the NYC office of Schweiger Dermatology in Manhattan. Upon arrival, we will cleanse the skin and apply a topical anesthetic to the skin surface.  It will take approximately 60 minutes for the aesthetic to take effect.  The anesthetic will then be removed and the Fractional CO2 laser treatment will begin.  The actual treatment takes between 10-30 minutes, depending on the size of the scar.  You will have only very minimal discomfort during the procedure.  After the treatment, the treated area will be very red and you will need to cover the area with ointment for the first few days. How much do Fractional CO2 treatments for surgical and traumatic scars cost? The price of Fractional CO2 treatments for scars varies by the size of the scar and the area treated.
