Fractional CO2 Lasers

MiXto CO2 LaserWhat is Fractional CO2 resurfacing?

Fractional CO2 resurfacing uses a laser to treat sun spots, fine lines, stretch marks, acne scarring and surgical scars.  Fractional CO2 lasers treat microscopic areas of the skin in each pulse, leaving the surrounding skin intact.  This method of treatment allows for faster healing and better results.

How do Fractional CO2 lasers work?

Fractional CO2 lasers produce microscopic laser columns, which penetrate into the deep layers of the skin.  This stimulates your skin’s natural healing process and new collagen is produced.

There are many types of Fractional CO2 lasers, some examples are:

  • MiXto
  • TotalFX
  • Fraxel Re:pair
  • Sandstone Matrix
  • SmartXide DOT laser
  • Pixel
  • Candela Quadralase
  • Lutronic eCO2

Which Fractional CO2 laser does Dr. Schweiger use?

Dr. Schweiger uses the Mixto Fractional CO2 laser.  He feels that this is the most effective Fractional CO2 laser, as it has the flexibility to tailor the treatment to each individual patient.  The MiXto has two spot sizes, allowing the energy to go as superficial or as deep as necessary.  It has an adjustable dwell time, which allows the treatment of all skin colors and gives us the option of delivering the energy in a more or less aggressive manner, depending on the patient and the condition being treated.  The MiXto Fractional CO2 laser creates more thermal damage, even at less aggressive treatment levels, which results in greater collagenogenesis (collagen stimulation.)

The longer dwell time of the MiXto has other advantages as well.  It creates a hypercoagulated tissue that decreases post-treatment pain, swelling, bruising and bleeding.  This hypercoagulated tissue makes Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing safer by lowering the risk of post-treatment infection, due to decreased bleeding and oozing.
