Fraxel for C-Section Scars

What is Cesarean delivery? A Cesarean delivery (more commonly known as a c-section) is the delivery of the fetus through surgical excisions made in the abdominal wall and the uterine wall.  A c-section, rather than traditional vaginal delivery, is performed when it is considered to be in the best interests of the mother or the fetus. What is the Fraxel laser? The Fraxel laser treatment is a non-invasive, fractional laser treatment that is very effective in the treatment of c-section scars.  Treatment with the Fraxel laser can minimize the appearance of scars after Cesarean delivery significantly. What is a fractional laser and how is it different from traditional lasers? Fractional lasers, such as the Fraxel laser, treat only a fraction of skin at one time, leaving the skin surrounding the treatment area intact.  Laser treatment of the skin using fractional lasers allows for faster healing than older resurfacing lasers that have commonly been used in the past.  Fractional lasers are safe and very effective in the treatment of c-section scars. What types of scars can be treated with Fraxel? Fraxel is an effective treatment for many different types of scarring, including surgical scars and acne scars.  The Fraxel laser is an effective treatment for those who wish to revise their surgical scars, including c-section scars. How does Fraxel work? The Fraxel laser produces many million microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into the layers of the skin to stimulate healing.  Collagen is then produced by the body to replace the damaged skin.  This process results in smoother, rejuvenated skin as well as a major reduction in the visibility and amount of scar tissue. Is the Fraxel laser safe on darker skin types, like Indian, Asian and African-American skin? The Fraxel laser is safe for use on all skin types, including darker skin types. What should I expect during the Fraxel procedure? Upon arrival, the skin is cleansed and a topical anesthetic is applied to the skin surface.  It will take approximately 60 minutes for the numbing medicine to take full effect.  The anesthetic will then be removed and the Fraxel treatment will begin.  The actual treatment takes between 10-30 minutes, depending on the size of the scar.  Patients experience only minimal discomfort during the procedure.  After the treatment, the area surrounding the scar may be red and slightly swollen and may feel somewhat like a sunburn.  This will resolve within a few days. How much does Fraxel treatment for Cesarean scars cost? The price of Fraxel treatment for c-section scars varies by the size of the area treated. Most patients will pay $1000 per treatment How many Fraxel treatments are required to treat a c-section scar? The treatment of Cesarean scars typically requires 3-5 sessions which are performed at one month intervals. Where is the Fraxel laser procedure performed? After an initial consultation, NYC dermatologist Dr. Schweiger will determine the best course of action for the treatment of the scar.  All procedures are done at Schweiger Dermatology in midtown Manhattan.
