Hand Rejuvenation

Why do I need hand rejuvenation? The hands are constantly exposed to the UVA and UVB rays of the sun.  Other areas that are commonly exposed to the sun, like the face, are more often protected with sunscreen.  Many people forget to apply sunscreen to their hands.  Over time, the hands begin to show their age, while the rest of your body still looks youthful.  Normal volume loss with age is apparent in the hands, as veins become more prominent.  Additionally, the years of sun exposure on the hands can result in wrinkles and sun spots (called lentigines) on the back of the hands. What is hand rejuvenation? Hand rejuvenation is a two step process in which both volume loss and sun damage to the hands are addressed.  Fillers, such as Radiesse or Sculptra, are injected carefully between the veins of the hands to even out the texture of the hand and hide the prominent veins.  This returns the back of the hand to its previously smooth appearance.  The second step of hand rejuvenation is to resurface the skin on the back of the hand, in order to improve the texture of the skin and remove sun spots that have developed.  In most cases, the Fractional CO2 laser is used to improve the appearance of the skin on the back of the hands. How do fillers work for hand rejuvenation? Similarly to how fillers plump areas of volume loss on the face, they can be injected into the areas of volume loss on the back of the hand.  Over time, volume loss leads to prominent hand veins that can make the hands appear older than they are.  Fillers can be injected between the veins to smooth out the hand.  The improvement from most filler can be appreciated immediately, they literally fill in the areas.  However, fillers also stimulate the body’s own collagen production, leading to long lasting improvement in the texture of the hand. How do lasers work for hand rejuvenation? The Fractional CO2 laser is commonly used for hand rejuvenation, due to its ability to resurface the back of the hand in only one treatment.  This laser pokes tiny, microscopic holes in the skin’s surface, but stimulates the production of healthy tissue.  This allows for collagen regeneration, to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and removes the pigmented cells that make up sun spots on the hand.
