How the Sun Damages Your Skin and What to Do About It

While many people still like the look of sun-kissed skin, most of the world has learned about how the sun damages your skin and have moved on to sunless tanning.  UV rays from the sun not only increase your risk of skin cancer, but they cause premature aging of the skin.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "The UV rays break down collagen and elastin in the skin, which causes fine lines and sagging of the skin.  Additionally, UV rays promote the production of melanin in the skin, which causes the development of brown sun spots." Fortunately, there are skin care products and in-office procedures that can help your skin bounce back from sun damage.  Once you have adopted healthy sun protection habits, such as sunscreen use, these treatments can help your skin to repair itself.  There are two main skin care products that help to repair your skin: retinoids and antioxidants.  Retinoids stimulate skin cell turnover and collagen production, to replenish the collagen that was broken down by the sun. Collagen production results in smoother skin, fewer wrinkles, and less sagging.  Antioxidants block free radicals from breaking down collagen and enable the skin to repair itself, often helping to even out the pigment and texture of the skin. In-office treatments produce the most dramatic improvement of sun damage.  The Fractional CO2 laser resurfaces the skin, to get rid of wrinkles and fine lines that form from sun exposure.  The Fractional CO2 laser works by stimulating the production of healthy skin cells and new collagen, to replace the damaged cells of the skin.
