How to Care for Your Skin After Laser Treatments

care-for-your-skin-after-laser-fraxel-laser-hair-removalThe recommendations for caring for your skin after laser treatment vary by the type of laser treatment you are having performed.  Dr. Schweiger notes that, "The most important thing to keep in mind when caring for your skin after laser treatment is to protect the skin from sun exposure and do not pick at scabbed areas, as this may lead to scarring or poor outcome after the treatment." We have put together a short guide to caring for your skin after the most popular laser treatments: Fraxel: After Fraxel treatment, it is important to keep the skin moisturized and protected from the sun.  You will experience 2-4 days of swelling and redness (similar to a severe sunburn) after the treatment.  During this time, you can wear makeup if you would like, but do not use any harsh products or topical anti-acne medications.  We recommend sleeping with an extra pillow on the night of your treatment, to decrease swelling on the treated area. Tattoo removal: After tattoo removal, we will apply ointment and a dressing to the area treated.  It is important to keep the treated tattoo greasy and covered in the days following tattoo removal.  We recommend using a simple ointment, like Aquaphor, in order to avoid irritation that can sometimes be caused by ointments such as Neosporin. Hair removal: It is important to apply sunscreen after laser hair removal treatments.  For patients having hair removal on the face, we recommend that you avoid applying topical acne medications or potentially irritating products to the face for one day following your treatment.  There is nothing wrong with shaving the treated area following your treatment, though it is normal to find that you cannot get a close shave, due to inflammation around the hair follicle.
