How to Choose the Right Cleanser for Your Skin

Here are Dr. Schweiger's tips on choosing the right cleanser for your skin:
  • Understand the needs of your skin - If you have oily skin, you will want to explore different cleansers than someone with aging skin looking for added moisture.  Oily skin can often benefit from the use of a foaming cleanser, which is effective at removing excess oils from the skin's surface.
  • Cleanser does not need to be drying - People with dry or aging skin should still use a cleanser regularly, but must choose the appropriate cleanser, to avoid causing dryness on the skin.  Those with dry or aging skin will benefit from the use of a creamy cleanser, which often contains moisturizers and other hydrating ingredients.  These cleansers can remove dirt and debris from the skin, without removing the necessary oils and moisture that the skin naturally produces.
  • Don't overdo it - If you do not feel oily after cleansing, do not feel that you need to use a toner after cleansing.  Many of the cleansers available today are intended to be a one-step process.  The addition of a toner, particularly during the winter months, can cause excessive dryness on the skin.
  • Choose a cleanser that you will use - This seems obvious, but this step is often forgotten when choosing a cleanser.  If you are a night-owl and don't get around to washing your face until early in the morning, you may continually forget to use your cleanser.  Think about using a makeup removing pad or a water-free cleanser (micellar cleanser), which is simply wiped across the skin and cleans the skin without water.
