How to Make Retinoid Creams Less Irritating

retinoid-creams-less-irritating-anti-agingRetinoid creams are some of the most effective anti-aging products that we can use.  However, for many people retinoid creams can be irritating and cause dryness on the skin.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "Anyone who can tolerate a retinoid should use one.  Retinoids stimulate collagen production in the skin, which results in fewer existing fine lines and prevents the development of fine lines in the future.  Additionally, retinoids can also even out the pigmentation of your skin and shrink your pores." It is important to know the best way to use a retinoid cream, to avoid irritation and dryness on the skin.  Here are Dr. Schweiger's tips on how to make retinoid creams less irritating:
  • Apply moisturizer before and after your retinoid cream. The moisturizer will not stop the retinoid from being absorbed into your skin and will allow your skin to tolerate the retinoid without becoming dry.
  • Use a retinoid with time-release technology.  Many prescription strength retinoids contain microbead technology, which allow the retinoid to be released over the course of the day, and be deposited directly into your pores (rather than sitting on top of your skin causing irritation.)
  • Use your retinoid only 3 nights a week initially; over time, you will be able to increase the frequency of use, but start slowly.
  • Only a pea-size amount of retinoid is necessary to cover your face.  If you apply too much, you will experience dryness and will be unable to tolerate your retinoid.
