How to Treat Age Spots on Skin of Color

age-spot-removal-skin-of-colorPatients with skin of color develop age spots nearly as frequently as lighter skinned patients.  However, removing age spots from darker skin types requires unique treatments, which are safe for all skin types.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "When removing age spots on skin of color, I often recommend a combination of prescription strength lightening products and in-office laser treatments, in order to obtain the best results." At-home prescription treatments, such as retinoids and hydroquinone, help to light the age spots and improve the efficacy of the laser treatment.  Retinoids stimulate skin cell turnover, to help exfoliate the areas of excess pigmentation.  Hydroquinone blocks an enzyme that is required to form pigmentation.  Together these topical medicated creams, in combination with regular use of sun protection, help to lighten pigmentation on the skim. Although topical medications help to lighten pigmentation on the skin, the most effective way to completely remove age spots on skin of color is with laser treatment.  Lasers, such as Q-switched lasers or the KTP laser, can be used to target the pigmented cells of the skin that form dark age spots on the skin.  For most patients, only one treatment is necessary to remove age spots.  The spots may get darker before they get lighter, this is a normal reaction.  It is important for all patients, but particularly patients with skin of color, to wear sunscreen following their laser treatment for age spots.
