Improve the Appearance of Stretch Marks

There is no miracle stretch mark cream that can eliminate the appearance of stretch marks or prevent the formation of stretch marks in the first place.  The truth is that, elastic healthy skin may not form stretch marks as frequently, which explains the theory behind keeping stretch mark-prone areas well-moisturized, in order to keep the skin healthier and more pliable.  However, as many pregnant women will tell you, even the most diligent application of moisturizing cream can still leave you with a belly full of reddish stretch marks. Stretch marks are scars formed by stretching of the dermis when the body undergoes rapid weight gain or rapid weight loss.  We commonly see stretch marks on the abdomen, breasts, arms, hips, thighs, and buttocks.  Initially, stretch marks usually appear with a reddish hue, but this often turns into a skin-colored or hypo-pigmented (whitish) appearance over time.  The appearance of stretch marks can become less obvious and they may improve somewhat, but stretch marks do not resolve on their own. Dr. Schweiger explains that, "Laser treatment is necessary to improve the appearance of stretch marks.  Vascular lasers, such as the KTP or VBeam laser, can remove the reddish hue from the skin.  Fractional resurfacing lasers, such as the Fractional CO2 laser or the Fraxel laser, can poke tiny holes in the skin's surface to stimulate collagen production.  These fractional resurfacing lasers provide the best mechanism of improving the texture of the skin and removing stretch marks."  A series of 4 Fraxel laser treatments can yield a significant improvement in the appearance of stretch marks on the body.
