KTP Laser for Acne Scars

What is the KTP laser? The KTP laser is a vascular laser, meaning that its energy is absorbed in the hemoglobin (red) cells of the skin.  This leads to the collapse of the blood vessels just below the skin’s surface, therefore reducing the appearance of redness on the skin.  KTP stands for potassium titanyl-phospate, although it is commonly referred to as the KTP laser.  The KTP laser can greatly improve the appearance of red marks left behind after acne in just one to three treatments.  The treatments are not painful and there is only minimal redness after the treatment; most patients go right back to work or social activities.  Mild improvement is seen in the days following the treatment, though the majority of the improvement occurs in the weeks following the KTP laser treatment.  The KTP laser is the best treatment for post-inflammatory erythema, aka the red marks that acne lesions leave behind.  Other lasers, such as the Fraxel Laser and Fractional CO2 Laser, are used to treat atrophic (“pitted”) acne scars. How does the KTP laser work for the treatment of acne scars? The energy of the KTP laser targets the hemoglobin (red cells) of the skin.  The KTP laser results in the collapse of superficial vessels of the skin, which decreases the redness on the skin that may be left behind after acne clears. What should I expect during my appointment? Prior to the KTP laser treatment, gel will be applied over the area to be treated.  Numbing cream is not necessary prior to KTP laser treatments, most patients describe the sensation as only a mild discomfort.  The treatment takes only a few minutes and you will feel fine immediately afterwards.  Bruising is rare after KTP laser treatment, though it is a common complication of other vascular lasers.  Makeup can be applied prior to leaving the office, if you choose.  Nearly all of the patients treated with the KTP laser return to their office or social activities immediately after the treatment. How many visits are required to treat red acne scars? We recommend one to three KTP laser treatments to remove post-inflammatory erythema (the redness from previous acne lesions.)  Some patients see great improvement after only one treatment, but most patients require multiple treatments with the KTP laser for optimal results. What is the price of the treatment of acne scars with the KTP laser? The price of acne scar treatment with the KTP laser is between $385 and $550.  We will review the treatment in depth, and determine the cost of treating your acne scars with the KTP later, during your consultation.
