Laser Treatments for Bad Hair Transplant

Which Lasers are Used to Remove a Hair Transplant? A bad hair transplant can be fixed with the help of two laser treatments: laser hair removal and fractional laser resurfacing, with the Fractional CO2 Laser or the Fraxel Laser.  Laser hair removal is used to remove the unwanted hairs from the scalp.  Fractional CO2 laser or Fraxel laser resurfacing is then used to improve the skin’s surface and reduce the appearance of scarring from the transplanted hairs.  Laser hair removal is generally performed first, to get rid of the transplanted hair.  Fractional CO2 laser or Fraxel laser resurfacing is then performed to smooth out the skin’s surface and restore the natural look of the scalp. How Does Laser Hair Removal Work? Laser hair removal uses a specific wavelength of light to target the hair follicles.  The targeted hair follicles will no longer produce a hair.  Laser hair removal requires a series of treatments, performed at roughly one month intervals. How Does Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing Work? Fractional CO2 Lasers poke tiny, microscopic holes in the skin’s surface to stimulate the production of collagen.  New collagen production improves the texture of the skin.  Fractional CO2 Lasers can resurface the scalp, to hide the marks left behind from the unwanted hair transplant.  The difference between Fractional CO2 Laser and Fraxel Laser resurfacing is that the Fractional CO2 Laser is an ablative resurfacing laser, while the Fraxel Laser does not ablate the surface of the skin.  Dr. Schweiger will determine which laser resurfacing method is most appropriate for your scalp. What Should I Expect During Laser Treatment of a Bad Hair Transplant? After your initial consultation for removal of an unwanted hair transplant, you will begin laser hair removal treatments.  Depending on the area and the amount of hair being treated, laser hair removal can take between 2 and 6 treatments.  Fractional CO2 Laser resurfacing or Fraxel Laser Resurfacing is then performed to even out the texture of the skin.  Resurfacing lasers stimulate collagen to smooth out the marks left at the hair transplant sites.  After laser hair removal and laser resurfacing is complete, it is safe to have another hair transplant to the scalp, if desired.
