Laser Treatment During Summertime?

The old-fashioned methods of practicing dermatology suggested that dermatologists put away their lasers for the summer and resume laser treatments after Labor Day weekend.  We now know that this is not necessary.  Laser treatments of all kind can be performed during the summer months.  Treatments like Fractional CO2 resurfacing, Fraxel laser treatments, laser hair removal, IPL and tattoo removal can safely be performed all summer long.  That's not to say that you should rush to the beach straight from your appointment with Dr. Schweiger, but with the proper skin care techniques, laser treatments can be performed all summer long. Dr. Schweiger explains that, "Summer is often the perfect time for a laser treatment.  Some laser treatments, such as laser resurfacing for acne scars, require a few days of downtime after the treatment.  It is often easier to take a few days off during the summer months.  It is important for patients to avoid excessive sun exposure, but with proper sun protection, laser treatments are safe year round." It is imperative to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen immediately after your laser treatment and in the weeks following your appointment.  A sun protective hat should be worn when direct sunlight is expected.  Increased sun exposure in the weeks after a laser treatment can lead to delayed healing and a phenomenon called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.  Patients can easily avoid this by making a conscious effort to protect their skin from the sun after their laser treatment.
