Recently Published Study Used Leg Hairs For Hair Transplantation To Create a Natural Looking Hairline

Although hair transplants have come a long way from the early days of obvious plugs, many hair transplant surgeons have been frustrated at the lack of great options for reconstructing the appearance of the hairline.  Hairs taken from the back of the scalp, the traditional harvesting site for hairs to be transplanted, are sometimes too thick and coarse to transplant at the front of the hairline. The hairs that naturally grow at the front of the hairline are usually thinner than hairs found on other areas of the scalp. A new study, published this month in the Archives of Dermatology, suggests that leg hairs may be used to transplant onto the front of the scalp.  The thinner texture of the leg hairs was able to provide the softer look of a natural hairline.  In previous years, there was concern over the differing growth cycles of leg hair from scalp hair.  Researchers wondered whether the leg hairs would last in the scalp, due to variations in their growth cycle; however, the transplanted leg hairs were still growing well on the scalp after 4 years.
