Liposuction Versus Zeltiq

What is liposuction? Liposuction (also known as “liposculpture”, “lipoplasty” or simply “lipo”) is a surgical procedurein which fat is broken down and suctioned from the treated area.  The fat cells are removed via a hollow apparatus known as a cannula which, while attached to a vacuum, suctions the fat.  The device is used to target fat in unwanted or traditional “trouble areas” including the abdomen, buttocks and thighs as well as the chin/neck, lower back/love handles and arms.  It is the most popular plastic surgery procedure performed in the United States annually. What type of candidate is usually considered for lipo? Liposuction is not meant to be a treatment for the obese or extremely overweight but rather for generally fit people who are having issues losing fat in specific areas.  As with all medical procedures, there is often a fairly large range of people treated by various practitioners and every case must be viewed individually.  Lipo is meant to alter the shape/contour of the body, not as a substitute for proper diet and exercise.  In fact, those who do not maintain a sensible lifestyle post-surgery are more likely to be unhappy with the long term outcome. What are some of the existing methods of liposuction? Tumescent Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures used today.  In this surgery, a saline solution containing epinephrine and lidocaine are pumped into the treatment area.  This fluid allows for greater separation between fat and muscle tissue during the operation and thus reduces bleeding as well as post operative swelling and bruising. In Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL), the cannula works in conjunction with ultrasound.  The ultrasound emulsifies the fat cells allowing for easier removal.  In Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL), the cannula rapidly vibrates allowing for easier fat removal as well. Are there risks and negatives associated with these methods? As with any surgical procedure, there are inherent risks with lipo including the need for general anesthesia and unforeseen complications during surgery.  In particular, different types of liposuction carry their own risks.  With all procedures, there is the risk of excessive bleeding.  In Ultrasound-Assisted Lipo, there has been a history of internal burns.  Because of its invasive nature, all types of liposuction can cause lasting damage to bodily tissue. How much does liposuction cost in the New York office? The price of liposuction varies on how large the area is and the anesthesia used. Cost can range from $4000 to $8000 typically Who performs the liposuction and where are the procedures performed? Dr. Michael Wolfeld, a fellowship-trained plastic surgeon performs all liposuction procedures. The procedures are usually performed in an operating room in at a NYC or New Jersey hospital. What are some of the newer alternatives to liposuction in NYC? There are newer, less-invasive technologies such as Smartlipo (also known as laser liposuction or laser lipo or smartliposuction) and Zerona.  Many doctors and patients have turned to these procedures as opposed to traditional liposuction as they have very little downtime and no need for the general anesthesia used in surgery.  Both modalities employ a laser to emulsify and thus destroy fat cells within the targeted region. What is ZELTIQ and how does it differ from all existing fat reduction procedures? Coolsculpting by ZELTIQ is a cutting edge technology that is completely non-invasive and requires no downtime.  Cryolipolysis which involves using“cryo” (freezing) to perform “lipolysis” (fat removal via destruction) to destroy unwanted fat cells.  Much like newer alternative treatments, there is less risk with ZELTIQ than more invasive procedures.  ZELTIQ freezes fat, unlike Smart lipo  and Zerona which melt fat cells.  The benefits of ZELTIQ Cool Sculpting include:
  • No downtime
  • No need for anesthesia
  • Pain-free
  • No incisions
  • Cheaper than traditional liposuction
What is more effective Lipo or ZELTIQ CoolScupling? CoolScuplting by ZELTIQ isanon-invasive way to remove fat in a quick procedure. In provides up to a 25% reduction in the treated area. Liposuction is a more invasive procedure, but gives more dramatic results. What kind of results can I expect with ZELTIQ? CoolSculpting by ZELTIQ has been shown toproduce a fat reduction in the area treated of 20-25% after a single treatment. Additional treatments(if deemed appropriate by both the patient and doctor) may increase the reduction of fat by another 20%. How much does ZELTIQ cost? The cost of the Coolsculpting procedure is dependent upon the size of the treatment area. The average cost of a treatment is typically between $1000 and $2000. Where is the ZELTIQ procedure performed? All procedures are performed in the midtown Manhattan office of Dr. Schweiger and are done on an outpatient basis.
