What is liposuction?
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed. Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy or simply lipo, is the process of removing unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. The most common treatment areas for lipo include the upper outer thigh area known as “saddlebags”, the abdomen, the flanks or “love handles”. Other treatment areas include facial/neck fat, (“double chins”), hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, arms and ankles.
Who is the best candidate for fat removal via liposuction?
The best candidate is a person who is involved in a weight loss regimen with physical exercise and good nutrition but still has stubborn areas of fat that remain.
Can you tell me about the actual lipo procedure?
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that usually lasts from one to three hours, depending upon the amount of fat to be removed. If only a small amount of fat and a limited number of body sites are involved, liposuction can often be performed under local anesthesia, which numbs only the affected areas. General anesthesia will be used for more extensive procedures or when it is performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures. Lipo is performed by using a hand-held instrument (called a cannula) to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. By pushing and pulling the cannula, the fat cells are broken up and then sucked out with a vacuum. The most common type of liposuction performed is tumescent lipo, a technique in which a medicated solution is injected into fatty areas before the fat is removed. The fluid — a mixture of intravenous salt solution, lidocaine (a local anesthetic) and epinephrine (a drug that contracts blood vessels) – facilitates fat removal, reduces blood loss and provides anesthesia during and after surgery. Fluid injection also helps to reduce the amount of bruising after surgery.
What is the down time for liposuction? How long is liposuction recover?
The skin overlying the areas of liposuction may be numb or sensitive for several weeks. Bruising and swelling commonly occur as well. A compression garment is worn for 4-6 weeks to assist the healing process. Visible changes are immediately noticeable and improve as swelling subsides.
What is the cost for liposuction?
The cost of liposuction depends on the number of areas of your body that will be suctioned. If the amount of liposuction exceeds that which can be performed safely in the office setting, then the procedure will be performed in the operating room where there is an additional price for the operating room and anesthesia.
Where is the lipo treatment performed?
The liposuction procedure may be performed in our NYC office or in the operating room at a designated New York hospital depending upon the volume and number of areas of your body to be treated.
Can liposuction be used to treat gynecomastia?
Yes. Ultrasound-Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL) is a technique that utilizes sound waves to break up fat deposits. A special cannula is used which is connected to an ultrasonic generator. As the cannula is passed through the tissues, fat cells are ruptured, releasing their contents. The liquefied fatty emulsion is then removed. UAL improves the ease and effectiveness of liposuction in fibrous areas of the body, such as the upper back or the enlarged male breast.
How is Liposuction different than CoolScupling by Zeltiq?
