New Melasma Treatment: Fraxel Dual

The new Fraxel Dual Laser is an exciting development for the treatment of melasma.  Melasma is a dark discoloration present most commonly on the cheeks, upper lip, and forehead.  Sun exposure and hormones both play a role in the development of melasma, though it is unknown why some people develop melasma and others do not.  Melasma is most commonly seen in women, most often in pregnant women or women who are taking birth control pills. Melasma has traditionally been treated with "bleaching" creams (ie. hydroquinone), chemical peels and laser resurfacing treatments.  Fractional lasers, such as the Fraxel, have produced great improvement of melasma over the past few years.  However, the introduction of the new Fraxel Dual system brings a more aggressive and more effective approach for improving the appearance of melasma.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "The Fraxel Dual works by producing microscopic laser columns, which break up pigmented cells and produce collagen to smooth out fine lines.  Unlike previous Fraxel Laser treatments, treatment with the Fraxel Dual offers a 1927nm treatment that helps to clear pigmentation and sun damage quickly, in addition to the traditional 1550nm laser treatment for improving skin texture." Sun protection is vital when treating melasma or any pigmentation disorder.  Even minimal sun exposure can cause recurrence of melasma.  Dr. Schweiger recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen for daily use in between treatments with the Fraxel Dual.  Melasma treatment is tricky, but the new Fraxel Dual is producing excellent results for the treatment of melasma.  All Fraxel Dual treatments are performed at Schweiger Dermatology in NYC.
