Photofacial NYC

What is a Photofacial?

A Photofacial (also called Photorejuvenation) is a cosmetic dermatology procedure that treats several different skin conditions.  A photofacial utilizes either Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or laser light to penetrate the skin and reduce brown sun spots and red blood vessels. Photo facials also promote collagen production and overall skin rejuvenation.

How does IPL Photo facial work?

Photofacials work by using a broad spectrum of light to selectively target melanin (brown sun spots) and hemoglobin (red blood vessels) on the body. These imperfections can be selectively targeted with IPL treatment  and when they are hit with the laser light, they are selectively reduced.  Usually a series of treatments are needed for optimal results. Dermatologists recommend 3-4 total treatments roughly 4 weeks apart to get the best results.

What conditions can be treated with an IPL Photo facial?

IPL Photofacials treat numerous skin conditions including:

  • Age spots
  • Liver Spots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Facial veins
  • Freckles
  • Melasma

What kind of results can I expect with IPL laser treatment?

Results will vary depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment but all patients who have photo facials (sometimes called foto facials or fotofacials) should experience a reduction of blood vessels, reduction of sun spots, smoother skin, rejuvenated skin and more even skin tone through out. For best results more than 1 treatment is always needed.

Can photo facial treatments only be done on the face?

No, photofacial treatments can also be performed on the chest, arms, hands, chest and back to reduce brown age spots and liver spots in these areas as well. Photo rejuvenations work great in these areas as well.

Can IPL Photo facial treatment also be used to treat acne?

Yes, photo facials have also been shown to improve both acne and acne scars. In particular photo facial IPL treatment helps reduce the redness that can occur after a large pimple.

What is the down time with IPL treatment?

There is no downtime associated with photorejuvenation treatment. After the treatment you can expect to be slightly red for a few hours but that is it. You can apply make-up immediately after treatment.

Are there any side effects associated with the IPL laser treatment?

Most patients report few side effects from intense pulsed light. After treatment mild redness and skin sensitivity is common.  Patients should avoid prolonged sun exposure for 14 days after the procedure. Very rarely temporary hyperpigmentation (dark spots) or hypopigmentation (light spots) can result from treatment.

How many Photofacial treatments are required?

Patients typically require between about three to four total IPL treatments.

How much does a Photo facial IPL treatments cost?

The cost of an IPL Photofacial session varies based on the area treated.
