Photofacials for Acne

Photofacials for acne can be beneficial, as they improve both active acne and marks left behind from old acne.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "Photofacials can be very helpful in treating acne.  The broad-spectrum IPL light that is used in a photo facial targets the p. acnes bacteria and kills this bacteria that leads to the formation of acne.  Simultaneously, the broad-spectrum IPL light is absorbed in red mark left on the face from older acne.  This type of light helps to break up the areas of redness on the skin, to improve your complexion while treating acne." Photofacials don't require any downtime after treatment.  The treatment itself takes approximately fifteen minutes.  Prior to the treatment, a very thin layer of gel is applied to the skin.  This gel protects the skin by conducting the energy of the broad-spectrum light directly to the skin.  During the treatment, you may feel tiny snaps of heat.  It is not a painful treatment and does not produce any pain after the treatment.  A series of IPL photofacial treatments are required for optimal improvement of acne.  We often recommend that our patients with inflammatory acne undergo a series of treatments combining photofacials with photodynamic therapy and the Isolaz laser treatment.  Patients who have photofacials may still use their prescription acne medications, but often find that laser and light-based treatments help their acne to improve more quickly than prescription medications alone.  Additionally, a dramatic improvement of post-inflammatory erythema (redness from acne) is seen after a series of photofacials.
