Q: Can you tell me about the new eyelash treatment product called LATISSE?

A: LATISSE® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%) is the name of the relatively new FDA approved eyelash treatment. It has been on the market since January 2009. Latisse is a solution you apply topically to the upper eyelashes once per day.

It has been tested in a clinical study and patients noticed benefit after only 2 months with max results in 4 months. It is officially indicated for eyelash “hypotricosis” meaning short eyelashes. It is necessary to use indefinitely to maintain benefit. I am a frequent Latisse prescriber and it has been a well revived product.

Side effects can occur from Latisse and may include eye redness, and itchiness in about 5% of patients. Sometime darkening of the eyelid skin can occur. People who use Latisse should also know about a potential side effect. Topical bimatoprost solution for glaucoma (they put it in the eye) has been shown to change the pigmented part of the eyeball in a few patients. While this has not been seen yet Latisse users, it is a possible side effect in which patients should know.
