Safe and Effective Ways to Lighten Dark Spots on the Skin

Dark spots on the skin can be frustrating.  They typically do not lighten on their own, and they can present from many different causes (including acne, cuts, melasma, sun damage.) It is recommended that you visit your dermatologist, in order to determine the best treatment for lightening the dark spots on your skin.  Your dermatologist can help to figure out the cause of the dark spots and give you a variety of choices for removing dark spots from the skin. Here are safe and effective ways to lighten dark spots on the skin:
  • At-home prescription brightening creams: The most commonly used prescription strength brightening cream is called hydroquinone.  Hydroquinone works by blocking an enzyme that is necessary for the formation of pigmentation on the skin.  It can be applied once or twice daily to lighten areas of excess pigmentation.
  • Retinoids: Retinoids work by increasing skin cell turnover.  The help to even out the skin's complexion by speeding up the turnover of pigmented cells in the skin.
  • Chemical peels: Chemical peels can be specifically formulated to light dark spots on the skin.  Chemical peels contain certain ingredients, which block the formation of excess pigmentation and remove the excess pigmentation that is present on the skin.
  • Lasers: Laser treatments, such as the Fraxel laser treatment, resurface the skin and stimulate the production of healthy, evenly pigmented skin cells in place of the damaged skin.  This is one of the most effective treatments for lightening dark spots no the skin.
