How Can Lasers Help My Skin?

Lasers emit a variety of different types of energy, each of which targets a different issue of the skin.  Lasers can be used to treat blood vessels, remove hair, get rid of dark spots, treat acne scars, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, treat warts, eliminate spider veins in the legs, treat acne and rosacea, reduce sweating, tighten the skin, remove tattoos, and improve the appearance of cellulite.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "We can use different lasers to address many skin problems.  The most common laser treatments that we perform in the office are the Fraxel Laser, the Fractional CO2 Laser, Laser Hair Removal, Thermage, Cellulaze, and the KTP laser." Here is a quick rundown on the lasers most frequency used at Schweiger Dermatology: Fraxel: The Fraxel laser is a non-ablative resurfacing laser used to improve the texture and pigmentation of the skin.  The Fraxel laser is used to treat acne scars, stretch marks, melasma, fine lines and wrinkles, scars, and sun damage. Fractional CO2 laser: The Fractional CO2 laser is an ablative resurfacing laser used to treat the texture of the skin.  The Fractional CO2 laser is often used to treat acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, and scars. Laser Hair Removal: Both the GentleLase laser and the Gemini 1064nm laser are used for laser hair removal at Schweiger Dermatology in NYC.  During your initial consultation, we will determine which laser is more appropriate for your hair removal.  Hair removal generally takes 6 sessions. Thermage: Thermage uses radiofrequency energy to stimulate the production of collagen.  Increased collagen production leads to tightening on the face and body.  Thermage is most commonly used to treat the neck, jowls, eyes, abdomen, and upper arms. Cellulaze: Cellulaze is used to improve the appearance of cellulite by 3 mechanisms - it reduces fat collections underneath the skin, it breaks up fibrous bands that pull down on the fat collections, and it improves the appearance of the overlying skin.  Only one Cellulaze treatment is necessary to reduce cellulite. KTP laser: The KTP laser is used to decrease the appearance of redness from scars, rosacea and blood vessels.  The KTP laser can also be used to target lentigines (brown spots) with minimal downtime.
