Summer Skin Prep

Get skin ready for summer Summer may feel like a long ways off, but the time to start prepping your skin is now. From laser hair removal to leg vein laser treatments, Dr. Schweiger answers your questions about some of the best procedures to get before the summer sun starts heating up. Q: Many people want a hair-free look in the summer, but don't realize that winter is actually a better time to start receiving laser hair removal treatments. Why is that? Dr. Schweiger: Laser hair removal treatments, which destroy hair follicles in the skin, can sometimes take up to 5 treatments to see results so it's important to begin treatments well before the time you want to be in a bathing suit. Additionally, I do not like patients to be too tan when receiving laser hair removal treatments. Having a tan can make it difficult for the laser light to pass through the skin and target the hair follicle. Q: What is the best treatment option for removing spider veins? Dr. Schweiger: There two effective treatment options for spider vein removal. One is sclerotherapy, where a mild chemical solution ("sclerosing agent") is injected into the vein causing it to collapse. A bandage will need to be worn for a day after followed by compression tights for a few days. I've found that a combination of sclerotherapy and laser therapy to work best for removing spider veins. With both laser treatment and sclerotherapy, the area can look worse before it looks better. Another reason why you would want to do this treatment in the colder months where it's easy to cover up the treated area.
