The Top 5 Reasons Why You Get Acne Breakouts

top-5-reasons-you-get-acne-treatment-nycWhile your acne breakouts are unlikely to be attributed to just one factor, these are a few things to consider when trying to determine why you get acne breakouts:
  1. Diet - This controversial topic is gaining some legs recently.  Although there is no conclusive evidence that diet plays a role in the development of acne, recent studies have suggested that foods with a high glycemic index, as well as dairy products, may influence the development of acne on your skin.  More research is necessary to determine exactly how these dietary influences may affect your complexion, but diet is definitely something to consider when treating acne.
  2. Stress - While stress is not the underlying cause of acne, it can definitely cause existing acne to flare.  Hormones that are released during periods of stress can contribute to the development of acne.  Managing your stress can help other acne treatments to work more effectively.
  3. Hormones - Women in their 20's, 30's and 40's may notice breakouts around their menstrual cycle.  These hormonal breakouts are influenced by the male androgen hormone, which stimulates overactivity of the sebaceous (oil-producing) glands of the skin.  Your dermatologist will help you to address the hormonal influences on your skin.
  4. Your hairstyle - Bangs and other hairstyles that allow the natural oils of the hair, and the styling products used on the hair, to come in contact with the skin can lead to acne.  These oils and products can clog the follicles, leading to a plug that attracts acne-causing p. acnes bacteria.
  5. Bad luck - Often it is not any of the causes listed above, but simply the genetic makeup of your skin that leads to acne.
Regardless of the reasons why you get acne breakouts, it is important to visit a dermatologist when the acne breakouts first appear.  Your dermatologist will help you to begin the appropriate treatments to clear your acne quickly and prevent permanent scarring.
