Want Younger Looking Skin in Your 40s and 50s? Start Today

We all know that applying sunscreen today prevents future sun damage tomorrow. So when you apply that same theory to Botox, dermal fillers and lasers, it makes sense. A new article published in JAMA Dermatology says that getting those anti-aging treatments long before you actually start showing the signs of aging, is extremely beneficial. Neurotoxins, such as Botox, work to halt your face from making the repetitive motions that will eventually create lines and wrinkles. Once those lines form and become etched in your skin, making you look tired, angry and just plain older--they are much harder to get rid of than if you never got them in the first place. Botox and Sunscreen: Your Two Best Preventative Friends More evidence that Botox should be a regular treatment in your anti-aging toolkit. A study published in JAMA in 2006 looked at 38-year-old identical twins. One of the twins was injected with Botox two to three times a year over 13 years in the forehead and glabellar region (the area in between the eyebrows), while the other twin received Botox injections only twice over the same time period. The twin who received the regular treatments of Botox did not show any forehead lines, while the twin who had received minimal treatments did. The crow's feet area on the regularly treated twin also showed less lines. Beyond Botox for Prevention It's not just early use of Botox that help keep the skin looking younger for as long as possible. Other preventative anti-aging measures include dermal fillers and laser and light treatments. Dermal fillers encourage the regeneration of collagen, as do laser and light treatments. Hyaluronic acid, which is found in Juvederm and Restylane, has been shown to help with the growth of fibroblast. Laser and light treatments have been shown to aid in changes of dermal connective tissue way after the lights and lasers are turned off. Bottom Line: While it can be costly to begin with Botox and other procedures early on, think of it as money saved in the future on more treatments and expensive skincare creams, that are not nearly as powerful as these in-office procedures.
