What Can Adults Do About Acne Breakouts?

Although acne is often considered a teenage disease, a large percentage of adults experience acne.  In fact, over 50% of women in their 20's experience acne, and large numbers of both women and men continue to experience acne well into their adult years.  We often meet with both women and men in their 40's and 50's who are still fighting adult acne. Dr. Schweiger explains that, "Adult acne and teenage acne have similar underlying causes.  However, teenagers usually have greater oil production and therefore are more susceptible to comedonal acne, also known as blackheads and whiteheads.  Adult patients may also develop this type of acne, though most commonly we see deeper cysts or acne papules in our adult patients." Treatment of adult acne has some similarities to the treatment of teenage acne, though it is important to tailor treatment to each individual patient.  For example, adult patients to to have much drier skin than teenage patients, prompting us to avoid medications that worsen dryness on the skin.  Another example is the need to use safe acne treatments for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding; these women often see a great benefit from in-office treatments, such as LED light therapy and the Isolaz acne treatment. We often recommend the use of a topical retinoid for our adult patients.  This class of medication is available from your dermatologist or by prescription.  The reason it is so useful in adult patients is that it not only helps to treat acne, but it smoothes out fine lines and prevents future wrinkles as it helps acne.  Retin A is the most common example of a topical retinoid, though many different formulations exist.
