What is Psoriasis?

Although it is a very common condition, most people do not know much about psoriasis.  Kim Kardashian publicized the condition when she received treatment for psoriasis on her popular television show, but that is often the full extent of the public's knowledge of psoriasis.  Here are a few facts to know about psoriasis:
  • Psoriasis is a chronic condition, meaning that it is not temporary and requires long-term management
  • Psoriasis is autoimmune, meaning that it is likely caused by body's own immune system causing improper regulation of the skin cells.
  • It can appear in several different forms, the most common being reddish raised plaques with a whitish silvery scale
  • The most common areas for psoriasis to appear are the scalp, elbows and knees.  However, psoriasis can be seen on many other areas of the body
  • Psoriasis can sometimes wax and wane; you may experience years between each flare, or it may be a constant condition
  • There are multiple treatment options.  The best treatment option for you will be determined after a consultation with your dermatologist.  Treatment options include topical steroids, topical vitamin D analogs, topical retinoids, topical coal tar, topical salicylic acid, injectable biologic medications (including Humira, Enbrel, and Stelara), infusions, oral medications, laser therapy and UV therapy
  • Some patients also develop psoriatic arthritis, which can lead to long-term joint damage if not addressed promptly
The truth is, Kim Kardashian might be the most famous psoriasis patient, but she is not the only one.  7.5 million Americans have psoriasis and over 10% of those people will also develop psoriatic arthritis.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "While psoriasis is a chronic condition, we have many treatment options available to control psoriasis and prevent its progression."
