What is the difference between microdermabrasion and dermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion and dermabrasion are often confused with each other; since they sound so similar, they must be very similar treatments, right?  This is not the case.  Here is what you need to know about microdermabrasion and dermabrasion - two different treatments, with different goals and different results. Microdermabrasion:
  • Microdermabrasion (commonly referred to as 'microderm') is a fairly fast procedure performed in a dermatologist's office or spa
  • There are two types of microdermabrasion - crystal microdermabrasion and diamond tip microdermabrasion.  Schweiger Dermatology utilizes diamond tip microdermabrasion
  • Microdermabrasion physically exfoliates the superficial layer of the skin
  • Microdermabrasion removes dead skin cells that clog up the pores
  • Treatments also improve the texture of the skin, helping to soften fine lines
  • There is no downtime after microdermabrasion; some patients have mild redness, which usually resolves within a few hours after their treatment
Dermabrasion:
  • Dermabrasion is a more invasive treatment than microdermabrasion
  • The entire superficial layer of the skin (the epidermis) is removed and injury can even affect the dermis (the layer of the skin below the epidermis)
  • Dermabrasion is used to resurface the skin - often for the treatment of atrophic acne scars and wrinkles on the skin
  • Dermabrasion can have up to two weeks of downtime after a treatment
  • Fractional resurfacing lasers, such as the Fractional CO2 laser, have replaced dermabrasion to some degree; fractional lasers also resurface the skin, but have much less downtime and a much lower risk of permanent side effects.
