What is This Dark Spot on My Upper Lip?

Many women ask us about brown patches that they have noted on their upper lip, cheeks or forehead.  Sometimes they have had them for years, and sometimes this develops for the first time after recent sun exposure.  Dr. Schweiger explains, “This condition is called melasma.  It is more common during pregnancy and in women who are taking birth control pills.  It develops after sun exposure, but often has a strong hormonal influence.”  It is important that women who have melasma avoid direct sun exposure; even the slightest exposure to the sun can trigger melasma to return.  They should wear sunscreen at all times and wear a hat when they will be outside for long periods of time.  The Fraxel laser is the most effective treatment for melasma.  It effectively removes the excess pigmentation in a very safe way.  Chemical peels and at-home medications, such as hydroquinone or Finacea, can be used to treat milder cases of melasma.  Click here for more information about the Fraxel Laser for the treatment of melasma.
