What to Expect During Tattoo Removal

what-to-expect-during-tattoo-removal-laser-nyIt is important to know what to expect during tattoo removal.  Will tattoo removal hurt?  How long does tattoo removal take?  How are tattoos removed?  These are all important questions to understand prior to your appointment for tattoo removal.  Dr. Schweiger notes that, "Tattoo removal does not have to be a painful experience.  We use a numbing medicine to completely numb the area prior to beginning the treatment.  A laser is then used to removal the tattoo ink from your skin.  Depending on your skin type, and the color of the tattoo ink that we are removing, we will determine that best laser for removing your tattoo.  It is important to visit an experienced laser surgeon for tattoo removal, to receive the best treatment possible." Upon arriving for your tattoo removal appointment, we will clean the area and give you a short series of tiny injections to completely numb the area.  After this, you will feel no pain or discomfort during the treatment.  Once the numbing medication sets in, treatment will begin.  We use protective goggles to protect your eyes from the beam of the laser.  Depending on the size of your tattoo, the treatment will last anywhere between five minutes and thirty minutes.  Many patients choose to have our newest tattoo removal technique utilized, where four tattoo removal treatments are performed during a single visit.  This is called the "R20" technique and we are one of the only dermatology practices in New York and in the whole country routinely doing it. If you are having this new tattoo removal treatment, you will wait at least twenty minutes after your first tattoo removal treatment.  After this rest time, we will perform your second treatment.  Each subsequent treatment will be performed at least twenty minutes after the treatment prior. Prior to leaving the office after tattoo removal, we will apply an ointment (to protect the skin and promote healing) and a dressing to the site.  We will review instructions on how to care for the tattoo removal site at home as well.  Your next treatment will be scheduled four to six weeks after your visit.
