Why You Need to Wash Your Face in the Morning

It is important to wash your face in both the morning and evening, particularly for those people with 'oily' skin.  However, to some people this seems redundant.  Why should you wash your face in the morning if you washed your face immediately before going to sleep?  Dr. Schweiger explains that, "During the evening, while you are sleeping, dead skin cells can collect in your pores and the sebaceous glands on your face continue to produce sebum.  If this sebum is allowed to collect in the pores and mix with dead skin cells that are normally on your skin, it can lead to the production of the precursor to acne - called a microcomedone." By washing in the morning, in addition to your regular evening routine, you clean out the pores before the microcomedone has a chance to develop.  We recommend that everyone cleanse with a gentle cleanser once daily, and that our patients with acne prone or oily skin cleanse with a salicylic acid cleanser for their second daily wash.  Cleansing brushes, such as the Clarisonic Mia, can also be quite helpful for washing your face.  These brushes should be used with a gentle cleanser and can clean out the pores significantly more effectively than a gentle cleanser alone. Cleansing brushes are not only for those people with acne prone skin.  Regular use of a cleansing brush can improve the texture of the skin and return the "glowing" appearance of the skin that can be lessened by dead skin cells and grime collecting on the skin.
