Why You Should Have Green Tea Extract in Your Skincare Products

green-tea-extract-in-skincareThere are so many skin care products out there, it can become confusing when trying to navigate the drug store or department store.  One ingredient to look for is green tea extract.  You may know that drinking green tea delivers much-needed antioxidants to your body, which are beneficial to your health.  What you may not know is that topical formulations of green tea can be helpful to your skin. Dr. Schweiger explains that, "Green tea is a strong anti-oxidant.  When used on the skin, anti-oxidants prevent collagen breakdown from environmental, or free radical, damage to the skin.  Additionally, in recent studies, green tea has been shown to decrease excess oil production, which can clog your pores and eventually lead to acne.  More research is necessary before we see green tea extract in prescription medications, but the benefits have been repeatedly shown in good scientific studies." Green tea prevents collagen breakdown from free radical damage (found in pollution, sun exposure, and other environmental factors.)  The result is smoother, softer skin, with fewer fine lines in the future. As Dr. Schweiger explained, green tea not only provides an anti-aging benefit, but it has been shown to decrease oil production on the skin without causing irritation.  This is an exciting skincare development, because many topical acne products cause redness or dryness on the skin.  In a 2010 study, a 3% green tea emulsion product decreased excess sebum (oil) production) without causing irritation to the skin after application. The benefits of green tea are currently being further studied, but green tea extract has already proven to be an excellent ingredient to seek out in your skincare products.
