Will Makeup With SPF Protect Your Skin?

We also get a lot of questions from our patients in regards to whether their makeup with SPF is adequate protection from the sun's harmful rays. It's hard to say how much sun protection you are actually receiving from makeup that contains SPF. It is believed that you need to use seven times the amount of makeup that you would typically use to receive the SPF benefits claimed on the bottle. Since applying seven times the amount of makeup you would normally wear will leave you looking like a clown, our suggestion is to also wear a broad spectrum sunscreen underneath your makeup. You might think it's not possible to apply makeup on top of a gloppy sunscreen and still have your skin look halfway decent. But that is not the case. Find a lightweight sunscreen made for the face. After applying it, wait about five minutes for it to fully dry. If you are concerned about your sunscreen leaving behind a white tint on  your face, look for a chemical sun blocker that does not contain zinc oxide.
